The Royal Mint

Product Description

The Royal Mint in London stands as one of the world’s most venerable operational facilities, boasting a legacy of over a thousand years in minting coins for the United Kingdom. It remains the birthplace of some of the most exquisite coins still cherished today. For investors and collectors seeking truly exceptional pieces, Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins are now accessible through BullionSelect.

Great Britain’s gold coins hold a storied history, among the first to circulate across vast expanses of the globe as the British Empire extended its reach. The original English gold sovereigns, bearing images of the sovereign leader of the British Empire, were last minted in 1604.

Modern Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins returned to circulation in 1817, following the implementation of the Great Recoinage of 1816. These sovereign coins were minted annually for a century, with intermittent hiatuses, including a single production year in 1925 amidst a break from 1917 to 1957, before resuming regular production in 1957.

A hallmark of Great Britain Gold Sovereign coins is their consistent reverse image, depicting St. George mounted on horseback in combat with a dragon. Designed in 1817 by Benedetto Pistrucci, this iconic image is accompanied by the year of minting.

The obverse side of each gold sovereign features a profile portrait of the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. Older coins display profiles of Queen Victoria at various stages of her lengthy reign, alongside images of King Edward VII and King George V. Post-1957 issues showcase Queen Elizabeth II, with three iterations of her right-profile portrait represented.

While the majority of these coins were minted by the Royal Mint in London, there were periods when production extended to mints in Australia, Canada, and South Africa. Presently, some coins are even struck by MMTC-PAMP in Delhi, India, underscoring the global reach and enduring appeal of Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins.
