Product Description

The American Arts Commemorative Series, produced by the United States Mint between 1980 and 1984, consisted of a collection of gold bullion medallions. These were introduced as competitors to coins like the South African Krugerrand and other prominent bullion offerings. Struck in a .900 gold alloy, akin to the composition of American gold coins circulating until 1933, these medallions were issued over a period of five years. They showcased a diverse array of great American artists and were available in two sizes: 1 troy ounce and 1/2 troy ounce.

Despite their artistic merit and historical significance, sales of these medallions were disappointing relative to their minting numbers. This was attributed to various factors, including a cumbersome ordering process and inherent issues with the medallions themselves. Foremost among the concerns was the absence of clear indications of the issuing authority, gold content, and legal tender status directly on the medallions, leading to customer dissatisfaction.

Over subsequent years, efforts were made to address these challenges and boost sales through program modifications. While the series faced criticism and was considered a failure by some, it nonetheless paved the way for the immensely popular and successful American Eagle gold and silver bullion coin series.

Today, these distinctive medallions are increasingly rare, as many have been melted down over time, adding to their scarcity and appeal among collectors.
